Grassy Creek Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole semi-private course located just 10 minutes from our house. Mt. Mitchell Golf Course is located about 25 minutes from our house at the base of Mount Mitchell. It is an amazingly beautiful course featuring 6,495 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.
Linville Caverns, North Carolina's only caverns open to the public and located underneath our very own
Humpback Mountain; 15 minutes from our house.
English Farmstead Cheese - located about 20 minutes from our house just past Linville Caverns on Hwy 221; offers a huge variety of homemade cheeses, farm-raised beed and assorted jams, etc. Currently open only on Fridays and Saturdays.
Oak Moon Creamery - visit this "honor system" store in Bakersville for the most delicious, wonderfully creative goat cheeses you've ever tasted! Located about 20 minutes from Parkway Peek.
Soggy Bottom Farms - if you want farm-fresh, non-GMO meats and eggs, along with DELICIOUS ice cream selections and local crafts, be sure to visit Lacey and her team. Located just 5 minutes from Parkway Peek.
Linville Falls Winery - beautiful setting on an old Christmas tree farm on Hwy 221 just off the Parkway; check their website for seasonal entertainment and be sure to check-out the tasting room for some surprising good NC wine; located about 15-20 minutes from our house.
Emerald Village Gem Mines, home to 7 real mines and has been featured on The Travel Channel; mine for yourself or just take an evening black light tour. 15 minutes from our house.
Grassy Creek Falls, a hidden gem just off the Parkway at Little Switzerland (you can actually stand behind the falls); 15 minutes from our house, not including the hike to the falls.
Penland School of Crafts, a national center for craft education featuring weekly and monthly workshops as well as on-site gallery of their artists; located between Spruce Pine and Bakersville, about 20 minutes from our house.
Crabtree Falls, featuring a beautiful 70foot waterfall with a swim basin during the summer; 25 minutes south on the Parkway.
Linn Cove Viaduct, the most complicated concrete bridge ever built; 25 minutes north on the Parkway
Upper Creek Falls - another great waterfall loop just 40 minutes from our house; slightly strenuous hike and the river is not crossable after heavy rains, but the views of several falls are amazing; great swimming holes, too.
Wilson Creek Recreation Area - features some of the best swimming holes in the area (HuntFish Falls and Little Lost Cove); about a 40 minute drive from our house for great summer fun.
Grandfather Mountain, a great attraction for all ages! The park includes a mile-high swinging bridge, wildlife habitats and nature museum, not to mention miles of hiking trails. Be sure to book your reseravations early for the annual Highland Games. About 45 minutes from our house.
Sugar Mountain, for some of the best snow skiing in the area! Summer chairlift rides and mountain hiking and biking also available. About 45 minutes from our house.
Hawksnest, the largest Snow Tubing Park on the East Coast and over a 1 1/2 mile zipline course; 50 minutes from our house.
Roan Mountain offers some of the best views in the area! With an elevation of 6200 feet, it is a gradual climb to the top and joins with the Appalachian Trail. Be sure to walk through the Rhododendron Gardens and make plans to attend the annual Rhododendron Festival in June. It's about a 50 minute drive from our house.
Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi River at 6684 feet elevation; 50 minutes south on the Parkway.
